In spite of its excellent prospects in terms of cast, director, and translator, this production was not a success. To say the reviews were not kind would be an understatement. Andrew Smith of The Journal (Newcastle uT) said "The cast make a good job of the thinly veiled plot and Colin Firth is convincing at showing Chatsky as a man at the end of his tether. But Burgess shuld perhaps have looked a little further through the vast archives of Eastern European literature before experimenting on a British audience."r.
